Jeff Paulsrud - Thumbnails

I spent some extra time on #17 because I needed to practice rendering rocks.  But the composition and lighting of the painting was finished in under 30 minutes.  Again, all feedback is greatly appreciated.

After seeing all of these together I noticed that I have the bad habit of centering most of my compositions.  I'll try to fix that for the next batch.  All critiques are greatly appreciated.

~ 30 - 45 min. each

  2. These are well painted, Jeff. #8 Is really nice. Aside from the centered point you made, you're using background shapes that point directly to your figure in 5, 7, 10 and 11. Because the first and second reads in the paintings only require me to move up and down, I'm never forced to explore the environment. You use the same technique with the leading lines in 2, but the difference is the bottom of the shape has an overlap that comes in at an angle and makes our eye to move before we reach the character.

  4. Hey Jeff. These are great. My favorites are 1,5, and 9. Watch out for being symmetrical on some of the composition and repeating similar shapes. The reason why 1,5,and 9 work so well is that you kept the bigger shapes simple and value organization works better than the others. Even though you used symmetrical composition on #5, it works in this picture. keep up the good work~!

  6. Nice, Jeff. I'm enjoying 13 and 19 the most. The simplicity and depth are working well together in 13, and 19 seems like it would be a neat, very hot throne room or something for a villain.

If I can offer a critique, I would say watch your spacing. Repeating shapes is a great way to show depth, but make sure you have a large difference in shape and size between those shapes. In the following link I've made one measurement per thumbnail and found all of the places that distance is repeated between objects and/or planes of contrast:

More asymmetry is more interesting! Keep going, dude.
